Back to Basics: A Few Different Types of Machine Tools

It’s easy to get caught up in the fascinating and complex mechanisms that allow machine tools to function. But before you can get into all of that, it’s important to understand machine tools and how different tools function at a fundamental level.

Whether you’re a beginner or you’re just looking to refresh your memory, this short guide should give you a good base for a solid machine tool understanding.

What is a machine tool?

Simply put, machine tools are tools and machines that allow us to shape metal and other rigid materials by means of cutting, boring, grinding, shearing, or any other method of deformation. These tools typically employ some form of cutting tool, as well as a means to guide this tool on the correct path. These mechanical wonders have allowed the creation of countless structures, including numerous manufactured components.

Basic Types of Machine Tools

    • Turning Machine

Also known as an engine lathe, this is considered one of the most important basic machine tools. During the industrial revolution, lathes like this were powered by steam or water. Today, the engine lathe, and engine lathe repair, is powered by much more modern means. But it remains the “father” of many more complex machine tools, as its basic components can be found elsewhere.

    • Drilling Machines

Drilling machines, as the name suggests, cut holes into metal with a twist drill. In addition, they utilize a multitude of other cutting tools to perform tasks such as boring, counterboring, reaming, and tapping internal threads.

    • Milling Machines

Milling machines are some of the most common machine tools. Since they’re so widely used, they’re also in for machine shop repairs often. Milling machines can also come in different types, including knee and column machines, bed-type machines, and machines designed for specific purposes.

While machine tools are designed for durability, machine tool repairs will be necessary at some point or another. No matter how advanced your knowledge of modern machine tools is, it’s important to remember that regular machine shop repairs are crucial to extending the life of your equipment.
