Machine Tools: When To Repair And When To Replace

Machine tools are expensive; whether you’re looking at a CNC lathe or a boring mill, the costs can easily run into the tens of thousands dollar range. If one of these essential machines incurs damage and is no longer functioning at capacity or full accuracy, the result can be as dangerous as it is problematic to business. So, the question arises: should you replace the costly item, or utilize local machine shop services to repair it?

Math and Machines

The answer comes down to a relatively simple equation known as The 50% Rule; you pick a set number (usually the cost of the machine when it was originally purchased) and compare the cost of repairing it through various machine tool repair services with that of purchasing a brand new machine.

There are a few extra factors to this equation. One, if the busted machine has significant age behind it, inflation may have drastically changed its value. Two, you have the option to pursue a used version of the same machine, although that comes with its own risks. Three, you may need to factor in the time spent traveling and waiting for your tool to be fixed, as well as time spent traveling and waiting for a brand new machine to be delivered. In the end, it all comes down to personal choice and preferences depending on your business, and the severity of the damage.

Prevent the Problem Before It Becomes One

Taking an active role in the care of your machines can make a big difference in their life span. When you consider the power behind lathes, grinding mills, and drilling machines, it makes sense that they might need extra attention in terms of maintenance. Properly cleaning your machine tools every so often can prevent buildup that may result in damage, but accidents do happen; sometimes things just break.

It’s important to remember that you do have options. Sometimes the easiest decision is the least cost effective; if expenses are a concern for your business, there’s a solid chance that machine shop services focused on the repair and restoration of your power tools is the best way to go.
