How Much do You Really Know About Machine Shops?

The very first and most primitive machine tools were handcrafted as early as 1200 BC. Since then, a lot of things have changed, but the physics principles behind the tools found in machine shops remain entirely the same.

Want to test your knowledge of the modern day machine shop? Whether you think you know it all or just want to learn more, this simple true or false quiz will test your knowledge of the machine tool services industry.

You can purchase machines at a machine shop

FALSE. While a machine shop does handle the creation and repair of many machines, they are not retailers. Machine shops have equipment specifically for machining, a process in which parts are cut, fabricated, and then finished. After that, these parts are then shipped to retailers or returned to the owner who was seeking repairs.

You can take you car in for machining services.

TRUE. Pieces of complex machinery such as cars, large engines, and even aircraft have all spent time having machine services performed. When it comes to part replacement or serious repairs, it’s definitely the place to be.

Machine shops can be found in educational facilities

TRUE. When you need to learn about machining and machine tool repair, you go to a teaching facility. These shops are typically found in educational or research facilities and are often the shops that produce new machine tool experts.

Humans do all of the repairs in machine shops

FALSE. Technology has accomplished amazing things recently, and advanced robotics is one of them. Believe it or not, robots are used quite often in machine shops to help complete work. While they can’t function without human instruction first, they’re incredibly useful when mechanics need to maintain a 100% sterile environment. Of course, for most everyday applications, humans still do the job best.

You can learn about machine services in high school

TRUE. While many machine shops exist in universities and research centers, it’s likely that you can find one in local high schools. While shop classes aren’t as popular as they once were, if a school has an auto maintenance and repair program, then a machine shop on campus is essential to the students’ learning process.

Machine tools are devices that create much of the technical world around us, but there’s always more to learn about them. Hopefully this quiz taught you something new or reinforced the knowledge you already have.
