Basic Safety Tips for Machine Tools by Machine Shop Owners

According to estimates, the US machine tool market is worth $6.6 billion. With such a large market, machine shop owners and employees need to know the basic safety tips for machine tools. This article will cover some basic safety tips to keep in mind when using machine tools.

1. Always Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

When working with machine tools, it’s important to always wear personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes safety goggles, a face shield, earplugs, and a dust mask. PPE will protect you from injuries caused by flying debris and harmful dust particles. Remember to also ask those visiting your machine shop to wear PPE as well.

2. Only Use the Tools for their Intended Purposes

When using any machine tool, it’s important to remember that each one is specifically designed for a certain task. Trying to use a drill as a saw, for example, can be extremely dangerous. Not only will you likely not be able to get the desired results, but you could also seriously injure yourself in the process. Always make sure you’re using the tools for their intended purposes.

3. Never Remove Machine Guards

Machine guards are in place for a reason – to protect you from potential injuries. Never remove or bypass machine guards, even if you think you don’t need them. They exist for a reason, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

4. Inspect Your Tools Regularly

Just like any other piece of equipment, machine tools need to be inspected regularly. This includes checking for damage, wear and tear, and proper functioning. If you catch any problems early on, they can often be fixed before they cause any major issues.

5. Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions

When using any type of machine tool, it’s important to read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. These instructions will tell you everything you need to know about how to use the tool safely and effectively. Ignoring the instructions can be extremely dangerous, so make sure you take the time to read them thoroughly.

6. Ensure all Machine Operators are Well Trained

Anyone who will be operating a machine tool should be well trained. This includes knowing how to use the tool safely and effectively, as well as understanding the potential hazards. Training should also include first aid and safety procedures in case of an emergency.

As a machine shop owner or operator, knowing the basic safety tips for machine tools is important. It helps ensure that your shop is a safe and productive place to work.
